King Protea & Eucalyptus Cake

King Protea & eucalyptus wedding cake for a beautiful Waterloo, Iowa wedding

The first time I saw a cake featuring a King Protea flower, I knew I had to make one myself.

For those who don’t know, a King Protea is a large flower, typically 5 to 12 inches in diameter, which is native to South Africa. It’s also commonly referred to as a honey pot or sugar bush, which, as a cake person, I find very cool! It is visually stunning and strikingly beautiful and is currently trending for 2020 weddings. Another trend brides are loving is TEXTURE. The texture on this cake was achieved by using wafer paper and pearl luster over a buttercream and fondant base. The blush, champagne and pearl tones create a neutral palette that can accent any color scheme or floral arrangement. The blue green from the eucalyptus pairs beautifully with these creamy shades for a very romantic feel.

The tall, slim design for this cake is also ideal for the modern bride. Smaller two-tier designs are perfect for those wanting a more intimate wedding ceremony and reception.

The King Protea featured on this cake, along with the eucalyptus spray, is made entirely of sugar paste. I love the challenge of creating realistic yet edible floral arrangements.
