Cakes Made from Scratch with Simple Ingredients

Why My Prices Aren't Competitive with the Grocery Store

Let's be real here. There is a time and a place for grocery store cakes. Maybe you forgot your anniversary and need something Right.Now. Or you put off ordering a cake for your child's birthday until last minute, and now your favorite baker is booked and can't get you in. Maybe your budget just doesn't allow for a custom cake right now. We've all been there!

On the other hand, sometimes you want something a little more elevated. That's where I come in. I've been asked a few times why my cakes are more expensive, and I'm going to break that down a little. When you get a cake from the grocery store, typically that cake has been mass-produced in a factory and then sent to the store already made, frosted, decorated and frozen. At best, it's made in store with boxes of cake mix and pre-made frosting with mile long ingredient lists.

When you order a cake from me, it's made from scratch, from the cake to the frosting to the board it sits on. I’m also a one-woman operation. I put hours and hours into each cake, making sure the flavors are on point and the design is well executed. I use local ingredients whenever possible. I don't use boxed cake mix, opting instead for flour, sugar, eggs and butter. My ganache and caramel are homemade, I make real buttercream frosting, every fruit filling is made from fresh fruit on my stove top. Naturally, these ingredients cost more than instant mixes, but I feel my clients deserve the highest quality I can give them, which is no less than I give to my own family. There is not a single part of your order that I don't put my all into, and hopefully that's reflected in the finished product.

Your cake will not only have a unique, one of a kind design, but rest assured, the ingredients will always be the finest quality!

King Protea & Eucalyptus Cake

King Protea & eucalyptus wedding cake for a beautiful Waterloo, Iowa wedding

The first time I saw a cake featuring a King Protea flower, I knew I had to make one myself.

For those who don’t know, a King Protea is a large flower, typically 5 to 12 inches in diameter, which is native to South Africa. It’s also commonly referred to as a honey pot or sugar bush, which, as a cake person, I find very cool! It is visually stunning and strikingly beautiful and is currently trending for 2020 weddings. Check out these ideas on Pinterest.

Another trend brides are loving is TEXTURE. The texture on this cake was achieved by using wafer paper and pearl luster over a buttercream and fondant base. The blush, champagne and pearl tones create a neutral palette that can accent any color scheme or floral arrangement. The blue green from the eucalyptus pairs beautifully with these creamy shades for a very romantic feel.

The tall, slim design for this cake is also ideal for the modern bride. Smaller two-tier designs are perfect for those wanting a more intimate wedding ceremony and reception.

The King Protea featured on this cake, along with the eucalyptus spray, is made entirely of sugar paste. I love the challenge of creating realistic yet edible floral arrangements.
